Title of Document: LOCAL LETTUCE: HEAT TOLERANT ROMAINE CULTIVARS AND VERMICOMPOST SOIL AMENDMENT TO INCREASE SUSTAINABILITY IN THE MID-ATLANTIC. Anna Wallis M.S., 2014 Directed By: Dr. Chris Walsh Plant Science and Landscape Architecture Local production of lettuce in the Mid-Atlantic utilizing heat-tolerant romaine cultivars and vermicompost soil amendment has the potential to significantly increase sustainability of agriculture. Heat tolerant cultivars would facilitate season extension into the summer. Vermicompost, compost produced using earthworms, may increase yield and quality of lettuce crops. This research tested a system incorporating these two practices. Success was assessed on lettuce yield and quality of lettuce across three seasons (spring, summer, and fall) and food safety risk of vermicompost. Several of the heat tolerant cultivars showed marketing potential when grown in the summer. Vermicompost did not significantly increase lettuce performance, but trends indicate that it may help, especially at higher rates. No food safety risk was associated with tested materials. Phytoavailability of cadmium in long-term biosolids-amended soils.

Agronomic use of biosolids has raised concern that plant availability of biosolids-Cd will increase with time after cessation of biosolids application. It has been demonstrated that chemical extractability of Cd is persistently decreased in biosolids-amended soils. This study was conducted to determine if Cd phytoavailability in long-term biosolids-amended soils was also persistently decreased....

Leaf Lettuce: An Alternative for Virginia’s Eastern Shore*

Romaine and Boston lettuce (Lactuca sativa L., Compositae) were identified as economically feasible alternative crops for eastern Virginia (Sterrett et al. 1996; Kalo 1997). Although lettuce is one of the most widely consumed vegetables, much of the production is concentrated in western states. Per capita consumption of leaf lettuce has increased from a low of 1.1 kg in 1986 to an estimated 3.4...

Short-Term Effect of Vermicompost Application on Biological Properties of an Alkaline Soil with High Lime Content from Mediterranean Region of Turkey

This study was conducted to investigate direct short-term impact of vermicompost on some soil biological properties by monitoring changes after addition of vermicompost as compared to farmyard manure in an alkaline soil with high lime content from semiarid Mediterranean region of Turkey. For this purpose, mixtures of soil and organic fertilizers in different doses were incubated under greenhous...

Bacterial Surface-Displayed GII.4 Human Norovirus Capsid Proteins Bound to HBGA-Like Molecules in Romaine Lettuce

Human Noroviruses (HuNoVs) are the main cause of non-bacterial gastroenteritis. Contaminated produce is a main vehicle for dissemination of HuNoVs. In this study, we used an ice nucleation protein mediated surface display system to present the protruding domain of GII.4 HuNoV capsid protein on bacterial surface and used it as a new strategy to explore interaction between HuNoV protein and recep...
